Two words come with the territory when you have our kind of focus, though, and they’re two words we’d all rather do without: breast cancer.
Tragically it is still a fact of life as our beloved and brave warriors fight on. According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide. One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed in her lifetime.
If that’s not shocking enough, let us put that another way. Look around you right now or the next time you’re out in public. Look for eight women, just regular people. Maybe your friend, maybe your family, maybe a co-worker or stranger. One of those eight women are statistically expected to have breast cancer . . . and a challenge of the human spirit she never imagined.
In 2021, an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer were projected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S. as well as 49,290 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. On average, every TWO minutes a woman in the U.S. is diagnosed with breast cancer. And an estimated 43,600 U.S. women in 2021died from the disease.
We’ve all been talking about Covid-19 so much, maybe you forgot that harsh reality. We hate it!
Fortunately, there is some good news. Breast cancer death rates declined 40 percent from 1989
to 2016 among women. There is still no cure, of course, but that progress is attributed to improvements in early detection.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is one of the prominent groups that have made a major difference over most of that time. It was founded in 1991 by breast cancer survivor Janelle Hail. She was diagnosed in 1980 at the age of 34, when there was little information about the disease. After treatment, Janelle made a commitment to help women by educating them about breast cancer and the importance of early detection.
We at Risqué are grateful of Janelle and her organization’s ongoing impact. We are proud -- and honored -- to support them in any way we can. That’s why Risqué pledges to give 10 percent of all net sales in 2022 to NBCF. All of us can do our part.
We want to spread awareness and fight alongside breast cancer warriors. They inspire us. We humbly back the NBCF’s mission: to help women now by providing help and inspiring hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education and support services.
The NBCF is one of the most recognized and respected breast cancer charities in the world, offering free, innovative programs that other organizations aren’t providing to women facing breast cancer so that no one faces breast cancer alone. Please visit nationalbreastcancer.org to learn more.
At Risqué, our functional products solve nagging problems to clear the way for women to feel more confident and comfortable. Breast cancer is a reminder for us all to put “nagging problems” in perspective. There are more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors in the U.S. who can use our help, and untold numbers who unfortunately will share in that future burden.
Let’s fight for a cure, spread the word about the importance of early detection, and remember that women’s issues are all of our issues.
